Skin tightening in NYC: find the right starting point
A softer jawline, crepey skin and uneven texture can overlap, but they may call for different treatment conversations. Before choosing a device, start with what you would like to change—and how much recovery you can make room for.
At The GLO in NoMad, the menu includes surface radiofrequency, fractional RF and RF microplasma resurfacing. This guide explains the differences so you can arrive with useful questions, whether you are planning a face, neck or body consultation.
Three approaches, three different conversations
| Approach | How it is delivered | What to clarify before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Surface radiofrequency, including XERF | An applicator delivers RF energy from the skin surface without microneedles | Whether the goal is firmness, what change is realistic and what your skin may look or feel like afterward |
| Needle-based fractional RF | Small electrodes enter the skin to deliver RF at selected depths | The exact device, operator qualifications, risks and aftercare |
| RF microplasma resurfacing | RF-generated plasma creates small treatment channels in the skin | Whether texture is the main concern, how the skin heals and the recovery plan |
The delivery method matters as much as the treatment name. A needle-free session and a procedure that enters or resurfaces the skin should have different consent and recovery conversations. FDA explanation of RF microneedling, Alma microplasma technology.
When firmness is the priority: XERF
XERF at The GLO uses monopolar radiofrequency rather than laser light. Cynosure Lutronic describes a platform with two RF frequencies and adjustable depth and intensity settings. The applicator stays on the skin surface.
The useful question is what this approach can reasonably do for your area and degree of laxity. Ask what improvement would look like for you, how it will be evaluated and what happens if your goal requires a different approach. A non-surgical treatment does not remove excess skin or reproduce a surgical lift. Cynosure Lutronic XERF information.
When texture is part of the concern
Reverse GLO uses Genius RF microneedling by Cynosure Lutronic. Microneedles deliver radiofrequency energy into the skin. Ask your provider about the proposed procedure, risks and recovery. Genius device information.
For needle-based RF, discuss both expected effects and serious complications. The FDA has received reports including burns, scarring, fat loss and nerve damage with certain uses of RF microneedling. Choose a licensed healthcare provider with device-specific training and experience; do not treat the procedure as a routine facial. FDA safety communication.
If scars or uneven surface texture are the main issue, explore Pixel Plasma for acne-scar appearance. RF microplasma is a resurfacing method. Ask about healing, aftercare and pigment-change risk for your skin rather than assuming every RF service has the same recovery. Alma explanation of RF microplasma.
Make the plan fit your Manhattan week
Tell the team about upcoming meetings, photographs, travel and outdoor plans before choosing a date. Ask when you can resume your usual skincare and activities. A phrase such as “minimal downtime” is less useful than knowing what you should expect on the next morning and over the following days.
Bring three starting points to the consultation:
- The area you want to discuss and the change you would like to see.
- Your medical history, medications, recent procedures and current skincare.
- The recovery you can realistically accommodate.
Then ask who will perform the treatment, why that approach fits the concern and what the total proposed plan will cost. You should understand the plan before committing to a series.

Quick answers
Is XERF a laser?
No. XERF uses radiofrequency energy. Laser and RF are different energy sources.
Is all RF treatment needle-free?
No. Surface RF and needle-based fractional RF deliver energy differently. Ask which device and applicator are proposed.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no single number for every device, treatment area or person. Ask how the provider will decide the initial plan and evaluate your response.
Can I book just before an event?
Discuss the event date before scheduling. The actual treatment, intensity and your skin response determine the recovery you need to plan for.
